The Suqa Natural Hair Convention is an initiative of “Naturals by SUQA”, a division of Suqa Salon that is dedicated to caring for natural (chemically untreated) Afro hair. The purpose of the convention is to educate men and women about caring for their natural hair; and to break some of the common myths and misconceptions about natural hair care. After coming to the realization that natural hair has for long been relatively ignored by professionals in the hair industry, the SUQA team decided to take up the challenge and promote their range of hair treatments and styling procedures specially tailored for natural hair. At the convention, guests were treated to a special showcase of various styles that can be done on natural hair; as well as an informative talk on natural hair care followed by an interactive question and answer session. The evening ended on a high note with styling demonstrations and one-on-one hair consultations where guests were given personalized client cards with a diagnosis of their hair type and texture, and how to care for it.
The tips that were shared during the convention include the following;
1. De-tangle hair only when it is soaking with conditioner and use a wide-toothed comb.
2. Spray hair with water daily to hydrate and seal with natural oil if wearing the hair in a natural style. ‘Seal’ hair with natural oil such as jojoba or coconut oil to lock in moisture.
3. Rotate the conditioners (both moisturizing and protein) every other week so that the hair does not stop responding to them. .
4. Use only temperature controlled heat styling tools and don’t use heat more than once a month. Wear hair in natural styles most of the time.
5. Do not braid too close to the edges (small baby hairs) to avoid thinning of the hairline.
6. Get rid of any split ends once every 6 months.
7. At bedtime use a satin or silk scarf or pillow. Cotton soaks up the oil in your hair, leaving it dull and dry and prone to breakage.
8. Avoid petroleum and mineral oil.
